Remember the post about these lamps?
Well I'm on round 2 of trying to update them and I am failing.
At first I painted them in Bon Voyage in high gloss and while the color was pretty most of the details were lost.
(Sorry I don't have pictures of them like that)
(Sorry I don't have pictures of them like that)
So then I tried this.
To some extent I like them, but I'm afraid they look like a paint by number project.
What do you think?
Be 100% honest, you won't hurt my feelings. :)
do you have a picture of them with the high gloss?
ReplyDeleteI think they would look fantastic with a simple navy blue shade :)
ReplyDeleteI looked back at the suggestions left when you first bought the lamps, and I agree with the idea of painting them a solid color (white, cream) and then pairing them with a bold colored shade, whether solid or patterned.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Julia!
These lamps have very pretty detail! I think painting them all white and then lightly glazing them to bring out the details would look amazing! Then maybe top it off with a satin polycrylic.
ReplyDeleteIf you love them, then that's what is important. I love the idea of them in a high gloss white, with a color glaze, like in a light green or yellow or whatever accent color you like. Then I'd pair it with a shade to match the glaze, but that's what I would do. Since there is so much detail in the lamp, the simpler they are, the easier on the eye they will be.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see how you finish them out.
I am not crazy about all the colors. I think the lamps would look great all one color or all white with one type flower painted in a pastel color like the tulips are. It would make me think of a black and white photo with a pop of color in it. I say though, you have to live with it so if you like it go with it. After you get the shades you may feel differently no matter how it is painted now.
ReplyDeleteHonest, well, don't leave them like that! It does look like a pottery painting class! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat comes to me is all one rich color with a glaze or patina to bring out the details!
It is hard sometimes and takes several trys, good luck! Maybe Silver or Cream?
Have to say I am not a huge fan of this version - but they definitely have potential. I am with several others who suggested painting a bold color and then glazing to bring out the detail. I know you will come up with something great - the best transformations usually start out as 'mistakes'.
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about them right now is that they do, in fact, look like an art project. But my house is filled with primitive pieces of eclectic origin. Good luck figuring out whether you'll do more.
ReplyDeletei think they are pretty cool and unique! i think with some distressing and glaze or rub n buff the crud out of them they could be really cool.
ReplyDeleteI think they could be fun with a pretty shade, one of the colors in the base, I agree with Cassie, a little glaze would soften them a bit.
ReplyDeleteI love them! I think they are fun and you could use a navy or light blue shade with them. They'd bring a touch of whimsy to a room.
ReplyDeleteThe lamps have great details. I think if you applied some of your base color over the colors and then sanded lightly you could still keep your colors and it would look more natural. Then wax clear then dark. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings - if they were mine I'd definitely go the all one color route. On the other hand I think they're reminiscent of what could be found in an Anthropologie store and I love that look. However, I'm a firm believer that if you're going to go, go all out. Maybe more color to the base and the neck and pair them with a white shade. May be worth a try! Keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteI really like Charisa's idea of painting the base and the neck. I think if the only white was the white behind the flowers, it would look more finished, and fun.
ReplyDeletehonestly? you know that i love you and i think that you are sooo amazing, right? so, yeah, i'm gonna be honest and tell you that i don't like them. i actually liked them how they originally were. maybe a more modern colour like teal, with the details aged like in the original ones. you could even go with the glossy white, and just age out the detail creases and crevices with stain or whatever it is you use to do your magic.
ReplyDeletedon't hate me ((hugs))

ReplyDeleteI think you could keep the colors if you distressed them a little bit. I love all the detail!
ReplyDeletefor me, this is all about where they end up. i see them sitting quietly on nightstands in a simple white bedroom. perhaps there are a few pops of color here but they are definitely the glue that holds the room together.
ReplyDeletethey're growing on me as i write!
If they were my lamps I would probably go for all white with glazing, or paint with copper and do a wash with turquoise for a verdigris effect.
ReplyDeleteI'm not crazy about them, but I don't hate them either. I think a solid color with glazing around the details would be my first choice. But just put them up for sale and see if someone buys them. If no one buys them within a week, redo them. That way you can give yourself a little time to step away from it and decide a new approach. And bonus: if someone does buy them you can just put it out of your mind and move on with the next project. :) Just because one person doesn't love it, doesn't mean another person won't. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
ReplyDeleteDon't like them. I think they should be solid, shiny, no glazing or antiquing.
ReplyDeleteI actually gasped, in a bad way. nope, i don't like them at all. I think one base color with a wash or highlight of another color or two over the entire piece is what I would do. I think the elements on the lamp should just remain a texture rather than singled out as individual elements.
ReplyDeleteOver from Vintage Revivals and I am sooooo glad this is the first post of yours I perused :) Thank Gawd other people do this :) A) Exhibited by previous snarky remark you probably have guessed I am not in the LOVE-IT category. B) I will send you 437 pictures of my own projects (as in what was I thinking, these should be put in the neighbours garbage to hide my shame) to make you feel all better about experimenting. :)
ReplyDeleteI found your blog just now. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often. I look for some modern furniture for my new home later this year.
ReplyDeleteOption 1)I think you should have painted them with some silver metalic Kyrlon paint (the kind that give it a mirror or mercury glass look)and topped them with a black shade. Forget about trying to paint the design. It was a bad design to begin with.
ReplyDeleteOption 2) same paint job and take off the light fixtures and ad a round top and make them pedestal candle holders. Would be great around a whirlpool tub ledge.
Its relative to you the overall look of the space it is in. Nice accent punch to a white room or against a wall predominantly deep blue.
