a sweet sweet settee, high boy and what would you do?

So one time I was at an auction and this settee came up for bid.

I wasn't planning on buying it, but when the bidding started, well it actually...it didn't start.

The auctioneer (is that what they're called?) started the bidding and NO ONE raised a paddle.

And I felt so bad for the settee!

(I feel bad for Christmas trees that don't get bought so this is right in line with that kind of crazy.)

I didn't what it to feel left out, so I raised my paddle, and sealed the deal - for a whooping $50.

Don't hate. :)

At first I wasn't planning on keeping it, but one afternoon on a whim I hauled it out of the garage and into our front room.

Bingo!

Our front room acts as our foyer/formal sitting/dining room and I want a little sitting area, but any couch-ish thing that we brought in had to be a very specific size.

And this fits perfectly.

I'm thinking of doing something like this inspired by Restoration Hardware.

Not the deconstructed part, but the fabric and finish on the frame. Probably a lot lighter on the finish actually, but you get the idea.

And of course with a double welt. A double welt is always best. :)

I found a similar fabric HERE

Don't you think it would look great with our future dark walls?!

Now let's move onto the highboy.

This was a local Craiglists score.

But I'm torn on what to do with it.

I'm thinking a chippy Olive Green with some chunky mercury glass or brass knobs.

1/2/3/4

Or some English Yellow with off  antique white drawer details and some tortoise shell knobs.

Or what about a rich, vibrant blue with chunky wood knobs?

What do you think?

Green, yellow, blue or something else entirely??

  1. i love the idea of olive on the dresser but i would hate to see those gorgeous original pulls replced! i love them! they could be glammed up with some rub n buff.
and looooooove the settee and where you are going with it! indigo or charcoal velvet would be the stuff of dreams. or at least my dreams.

  2. I think that dark green with new knobs would be gorgeous. But I'm such a huge fan of blue - that would be my second choice :) That settee is going to be gorgeous when you are done with it! Excited to see how it turns out.

  3. Love the settee - it has so much awesome potential! As far as the highboy - tough call. I LOVE blue so I pretty much always lean that direction but both of the other colors are gorgeous too - and I love the mercury glass hardware. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  5. I think I love the settee! But definitely a very specific find. You would have to have a place just for that. Glad you did, it is so unique!

  6. [LOL] I have 3 kitchen cabinets I bought at 3 different resale places that match the drawers on your highboy. I'm only using the boxes. What the doors? Go figure! That scooped corner thing must have been a trend at one point.

I LOVE your settee. I also look forward to hearing how you age and weather your finish. (Don't forget Citristrip will take the varnish AND stain off in one felled swoop! No sanding!) It's interesting that it seems like it was meant to be!

  8. My six year old felt sorry for some rice pops that I made for her birthday party that only one little girl ate - and she didn't bring it up until months later - she regretted not having any and it made her feel sad. "What happened to the rest of them, mum?'
Haha! So I def get your kind of crazy;-)
Love your plan for the settee! The dark walls will make it pop, so anything too busy would perhaps be too much? x

  9. What about the blue with the mercury knobs? I think those knobs with the blue #2 would be stunning
